The Letter J

Jamesian parenthesis (n.)

Used mostly in fiction, but seen in almost all forms of prose and poetry, the Jamesian parenthesis (also known as an aside) is a digression from the narrative placed in parentheses or brackets (like these). It is most commonly used within a sentence or within a line of poetry, but can be used as a stand-alone device. It was named after American-British author Henry James. See Also: aside

e.g. In the following example, the bold, italicised text is a Jamesian parenthesis.

The rain in Spain (if it at all rains, that is - it's not likely these days) falls mainly on the plain.
