How To Bury The Living

You will know of this.
It will furrow your brow and twist your sheets
deep into still, still nights. You may need to mumble
assurances to feel that you exist
or that you ever existed.
You may feel inclined to resort to counting
worry beads with affirmations;
to eat too much cake;
to discover the maelstrom of stupor.
You will discover how the mourner
must also be undertaker - of how memories are measured
up for suit and coffin alike -
of how you will die too. A whole self.
The nervous system that grew beneath
the countless delicacies of touch; the heart that sniffed
the wind timidly at first, that same heart
which became a citadel of light
that archived the lore and legend of an era,
the language of two.
Soon enough, oblivion will gnaw the last empty
socket, and decay will have its way with history.
Daisies will push through the wretchedness.

Take care, keep safe, and stay beautiful,

With love and peace,

    One thing that I love about your poetry is that there are always pearls of wisdom that can stand entirely on their own, completely separate from the poem. The lines I take away from this:
    "..You will discover how the mourner
    must also be undertaker.."
    So very true. Powerful..

      Thanks, Amy. That part of the poem came to me in the early stages, and I must admit, I love it when a seemingly perfect paradox springs to mind. The sufferer fullfilling three roles - the undertaker, the mourner, and the dead - seems a little awkward, but I have found this to be true in life. Who can put things to rest, if not us? Who will mourn over the sorrowful passing of something special, if not us? And who dies, if not us?

    Now I wish to buy a pot of daisies and set them where I started living again as a human being in celebration. My professor might be a little annoyed after a couple days that the flowers have taken over the seat in front of her desk and would want the chair for other students of hers!!

    "decay will have its way with history....Daisies will push through the wretchedness."

    Decay is immenient, but so are the daisies...Love it!

      Like everything that decays - energy goes somewhere else; transformations occur; the circle turns. Hence the daisies - and the psychological need for daisies. If we didn't have that possibility, of things blossoming out of hardship, of courses altering and forttunes changing, this would really be a bleak old world, wouldn't it?

      Oh, and as for celebratring your life, I hope it's as long a celebration as possible. Being chained to anything is limiting for the psyche, the heart, and the soul. Though freedom has its limitations, nothing compares.
