- You are here: Jé Maverick
- I Long To Whisper Faintly

I long to whisper faintly,
so faintly that only you should hear me -
not gods, nor angels, nor nearby pines
with their needling ears -
so faintly that I should not hear myself.
Perhaps I would say, my love,
that our love is a flower
with grim petals - that they are closed forever -
dying without blossom on the stalk.
Alone, the path of this night is so cruel.
You live beyond horizon,
beyond straining eye and whispered thought, beyond
even thoughts that are screamed -
beyond even sunrise.
To the East, always and ever to the East:
the compass point of each day's longing.
This night is cruel, so cruel
one can hear Time breathing behind
its black curtain, breathing
from behind the stoic dunes, breathing
from beneath the silent waters,
slick as polished glass.
I long to whisper faintly,
so faintly that only you should hear me -
below the hum of fortune's spinning wheel;
below the hearing range of crabs and gulls
and nearby pines with their needling ears;
below even the sound of Time's breath in the Universe.
Perhaps I would say, my love,
that our love is a peace
awaiting war cries - that we are impoverished warriors -
dying without glory on our swords.
But you are to the East, always,
always and ever to the East:
and alone, the night is so cruel
and Moses is absent from the beaches
and the oceans will not part for us.
Take care, keep safe, and stay beautiful,
With love and peace,
